A salon doing keratin properly needs a ventilated treatment room, a technician trained in the specific system being used, and a willingness to strand-test before committing your whole head to it.
Keratin systems release vapour under heat. A sealed treatment room with extraction protects you and the technician. If a salon performs keratin at an open cutting station, that tells you something about their standards.
Keratin fills the structural gaps left in a damaged hair shaft, then seals them under a flat iron at a controlled temperature. Temperature control is the entire craft: too cool and the keratin does not bond, so the treatment washes out in weeks; too hot and you damage the hair you set out to repair.
It is a smoothing treatment, not a permanent straightener. Keratin reduces frizz while keeping movement, and it fades gradually over three to five months. Rebonding, by contrast, chemically restructures the hair's bonds and is permanent until the hair grows out.
